Heidi Tracey

Heidi Tracey is a contractor at Southern Maryland Mental Health.

Whether you are going through a life transition yourself, struggling emotionally, facing an impending loss, or a circumstance that makes you feel like you have no control over your life, it can be difficult to try to keep moving forward. We can work together to identify steps you feel will help you to re-harness control in your life. It’s amazing how much impact even small, incremental changes can make. We identify these targets starting our first session. My goal is to empower you. We can process situations, work to understand patterns and create a plan to deal with life's stressors.

I utilize an active, client-centered, approach to help my clients focus on the areas that are impacting their lives. I believe in forming genuine connections and an alliance with clients to create a safe and supportive space to process their concerns and to problem-solve. I also enjoy sprinkling in psychoeducation and some humor, as appropriate. In your first session, we can identify what brought you to therapy. I use an integrative approach to help clients to explore ways to meet their goals. I enjoy engaging clients in social problem-solving and assisting them in developing "change talk" to help identify healthy ways to deal with difficult situations.

Professional Experience

I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor at Southern Maryland Mental Health under supervision of Rebecca Bickel LC1967, as well as a school psychologist. I am a graduate of Salisbury University with a B.A. in Psychology with a Minor in Communication Arts, I went on to pursue a Master’s Degree and Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology from Towson University. I additionally hold a Post-Master’s Certificate in Clinical Community Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy but also use an integrative approach as well. I have worked for public school systems in southern and central Maryland for 18 + years as a school psychologist and have accumulated extensive experience working with teens, young adults and families. I am excited to be able to support the same clientele as a part of Southern Maryland Mental Health!
