EMDR Therapy in Calvert County, Southern Maryland

By Molly Stackhouse

EMDR therapy, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is a psychotherapy that has been clinically proven effective in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR therapy is a focused therapy that helps people to process and heal from traumatic experiences.

EMDR can be helpful for other conditions, including:

Anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Depression.

Trauma-related phobias such as fear of heights, fear of spiders, or fear of public speaking.

Complicated grief.

Body dysmorphic disorder.

Traumatic brain injury.

Pain management.

Addiction.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR therapy works by using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, to help the brain process traumatic memories. When a person experiences a traumatic event, their brain gets stuck in a state of hyperarousal. This can lead to symptoms of PTSD, such as flashbacks, nightmares, and avoidance.

EMDR therapy helps to desensitize the brain to the traumatic memories by stimulating both sides of the brain simultaneously. This helps the brain to process the memories and to integrate them into the person's overall memory network.
